Vehicle weight reduction is a major strategy for reducing carbon footprint. This relies on the use of high performance multi-material structures. Joining is a key but costly issue. A new technology, Vaporizing Foil Actuator Welding (VFAW), offers arguably the most cost-effective, scalable, and high performance solution available. This work will bring these benefits to the market by producing prototype manufacturing machines and getting them in the hands of industry and an emerging workforce.
This 2-year project started in June 2016 and updates on activities will be posted here.
